چکیده

Introduction Groundwater supply sustainable yield is herein defined as how much water can be withdrawn from an aquifer system, where and for how long, with acceptable physical, economical, environmental, social, cultural, institutional, and legal consequences. The purpose of this Technical Commentary is to focus on the following technical aspects of groundwater supply sustainable yield that are sometimes overlooked: bounded supply, supply evaluation difficulties, aquifer system response time, supply management considerations, supply uncertainties, and needed supply evaluation and management improvements. These hydraulic and hydrogeologic aspects of aquifer development and management should be considered, along with political, social, and economic aspects, to successfully achieve a sustainable groundwater supply.

Groundwater resources in the hard to reach areas of Bangladesh: Constraints for drinking water supply and strategies for sustainable use

An assessment is made on the current groundwater use and further development potential in the hard to reach (HtR) areas of Bangladesh following a combination of secondary literature review and synthesis of primary information gathered from the fields. Also, primary analyses of groundwater quality, levels, recharge and use were done using secondary data. The findings reveal that the hydrogeology...

Groundwater Development in Hard Rocks

Groundwater development in fractured hard rock aquifers has always assumed a secondary role compared with that in unconsolidated alluvial strata or in soluble carbonate rocks. This is because of the nonextensive, irregular, nonisotropic, and inhomogeneous nature of the aquifer and the relatively small yields of water available from dug-wells or drilled bores. However, many of the highly populat...

Designing a new cropping system for high productivity and sustainable water usage under climate change

The food supply is being increasingly challenged by climate change and water scarcity. However, incremental changes in traditional cropping systems have achieved only limited success in meeting these multiple challenges. In this study, we applied a systematic approach, using model simulation and data from two groups of field studies conducted in the North China Plain, to develop a new cropping ...

Defining an Ecologically Ideal Shallow Groundwater Depth for Regional Sustainable Management: Conceptual Development and Case Study on the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China

The depth and fluctuation of shallow groundwater influence water supply to land surface vegetation. Knowledge of an ecologically ideal depth range of shallow groundwater for a vegetation ecosystem can be crucial for sustainability of regional water resource management and ecological conservation. In this study, we developed a conceptual model that identifies an upper and a lower boundary of sha...

Economic impact of the groundwater overdraft on agriculture: A case study of the Neishaboor plain

In the last decade, various aspects of groundwater resource depletion have gained a special place among water sector experts and decision makers. Research in this area is relatively new in most parts of the world. Groundwater depletion, which has been in a concerning state for most plains in Iran in recent years, has various consequences which impede sustainable development. One of the most imp...
